Born on this day in 1942, Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia, the American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known as the lead singer of the Grateful Dead, would have turned 80. Sadly, we lost Jerry on August 9, 1995, eight days after his 53rd birthday, Garcia died of a heart attack inside a rehabilitation clinic. He had long struggled with drug addiction, smoking, weight issues, sleep apnea, and diabetes, all of which contributed to his death.
